Bread is probably the world's most ubiquitous staple. Regardless of cultural background, everyone has eaten bread in one form or another. This can be attributed to the fact that the ingredients use to make different types of bread are often plentiful and readily available. The basic ingredients are flour and water. Other ingredients can be added at your discretion, for example, eggs, sugar, milk and raisins can all be added to enhance the flavor of bread.

It is interesting to note that different types of bread are indigenous to different cultures. In Mexico, bread is called pan. In addition, the staple bread in Mexico is the tortilla. In Spain, bread is called pandesal, or literally translated- saltbread. In Finland and Russia, dark Rye bread is the staple of choice. In south asian cultures, flatbreads such as Roti, Paratha, and Naan are very popular.

Going to a local bread shop or bakery can be a tantalizing experience. Different kinds of bread all have different tastes. Some go well with a cup of tea, some are great for making sandwiches, while other types of bread are best for dipping in soups and stews. Regardless of the type of bread, you owe it to yourself to experience different cultures through this ubiquitous culinary staple.
