Father’s Day falls on the third Sunday in June. Sonora Smart Dodd held the first Father’s Day celebration in Spokane, Washington in honor of her own father, a widowed Civil War veteran who raised his six children alone.
Hearing a sermon honoring mothers for Mother’s Day, Dodd suggested recognizing fathers as well. The idea slowly made its way across the nation and, in 1966, President Lyndon B. Johnson signed a presidential proclamation recognizing the third Sunday in June Father’s Day. In 1972, President Nixon established a national observation of the holiday.
Buying gifts for Dad can be hard, and while taking the easy road with a tie or coffee mug is tempting, why not do something really special for the Old Man this time? To help nudge you in the right direction, we have some suggestions that we know can help turn his Father’s Day into more than just another game night.
