Hair dye was traditionaly applied to the hair as one overall colour. The modern trend is to use several colours to produce streaks either on top of the natural colour or on top of a single bass colour. These are reffured to as Highlighting and Lowlighting. They can be applied by using Foils, Caps, or even Balayage.
A minority of hair colouring products are designed to create hair colours not typically found in nature. These are available in almost every colour imaginable, including green and fuchsia. These dyes are usualy sold by stores and websites that have a Punk theme. Some of the brand names include: Beyond The Zone, Splat, Clairol Jazzing, Special Effects, Punky Colour, and Manic Panic. Some exotic colour shades are blacklight reactive, to show up under nightclub lighting.
